Find Your Anchor: How to Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Skill
Harbor & Haven Wellness | Between the Waves
When emotions begin to feel like waves crashing in all at once, grounding can help bring your attention back to the shore.
The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Skill is a simple sensory exercise that encourages you to shift your attention away from racing thoughts, worry, or overwhelm and reconnect with what is happening around you right now.
You don't need any special supplies. All you need are your senses and a few minutes.
How to Practice 5-4-3-2-1
Start by getting as comfortable as you can. You can sit, stand, or slowly walk while completing the exercise. Take a comfortable breath and begin noticing your surroundings.
5 — Notice FIVE things you can see.
Look around and name five things. Pay attention to colors, shapes, light, movement, or small details you may normally overlook.
4 — Notice FOUR things you can feel.
Bring your attention to physical sensations. Maybe you notice your feet against the floor, clothing against your skin, the temperature of the air, or the chair supporting your body.
3 — Notice THREE things you can hear.
Listen closely. Notice sounds that are nearby and farther away—a fan, voices, birds, traffic, music, or even your own breathing.
2 — Notice TWO things you can smell.
Notice scents already around you or choose something familiar, such as lotion, coffee, soap, a candle, or fresh air.
1 — Notice ONE thing you can taste.
Notice the taste already in your mouth, take a sip of water, use a mint, or slowly notice the flavor of a favorite snack.
Take a Moment Before Moving On
Once you've reached 1, pause.
Ask yourself:
What do I notice in my body now?
You don't have to feel completely calm for grounding to be helpful. The purpose is to reconnect with the present moment and give your mind something safe and concrete to focus on.
You can repeat the exercise, move through it more slowly, or pair it with another grounding practice such as slow breathing.
Your Harbor Haven
Grounding doesn't require you to stop the waves.
It gives you an anchor while they pass.
5 things. 4 sensations. 3 sounds. 2 scents. 1 taste.
When things feel overwhelming, return to your senses, return to the present, and find your anchor.
Like the tide, you can return to calm. You have an anchor within you.
